Deacon Benjamin Pierce
Genealogy of John Harwood Pierce:
5th Generation

Deacon Benjamin Pierce [5th generation] was born March 1, 1746, and died May 4, 1809. He and his descendants form the fifth American generation of Pierces in our family tree. His father was Benjamin Pierce [4th generation].

On March 2, 1769, when he was 20 years old, Benjamin Pierce [5th generation] married Mrs. Priscilla (Merritt) Wade. Priscilla was born June 26, 1743, and was a widow of 23 years old at the time of her marriage to Benjamin [5th generation]. Priscilla and Benjamin [5th generation] had ten children.

The family began their married life residing in Scituate. Later they moved to Chesterfield, Mass.

Benjamin [5th generation] was deacon of the Congregatonal church in Chesterfield.

Benjamin [5th generation] died at the age of 63; however, Priscilla outlived her husband by more than 26 years, living to the advanced age of 94.


28. Deacon Benjamin Pierce [5th generation], born March 1, 1746; died May 4, 1809.

married Mrs. Pricilla (Merritt) Wade on March 2, 1769. They had these ten children.

36. Israel Pierce. He was physically disabled and walked with crutches. He became an accountant, and worked for a number of years in a wholesale business in Albany, New York. Later, he moved back to Chesterfield, Mass. where he clerked for his brother Benjamin [5th] in two stores which Benjamin owned: one in Chesterfield and another in Westhampton.
37. Charity Pierce. On Jan. 6, 1792, she married Hon. Sylvanus Clapp (born 1764). He was the son of Ebenezer and Catharine (Catlin) Clapp of Northhampton. The couple settled in Westhampton, Mass. Charity's husband was a very popular man. Although he was a Democrat, he was chosen to serve at various times to the State Legislature by a union of both political parties. He had an engaging personality and a happy disposition. He possessed the kean speaking and conversational skills, and could keep listeners entranced for hours with story telling.
38. Priscilla Pierce. Died before 1809.
39. Jane Pierce. Died before 1809.
40. Mabel Pierce. Died as a child.
41. Annie Pierce. Married a Stebbins.
42. Zeriah Pierce. Died before 1809.
43. Tirzah Pierce. Married a Parsons.
44. Parnel Pierce. Died before 1809.
