On the way to Chiang Mai, our bus began to overheat, so our crew changed out all of the drive belts at a rest stop.

We moved on to another rest stop called Cabbages and Condoms. This is part of a chain started by a philanthropic Thai as a means of promoting birth control. The name comes from a statement he made about making condoms as common as cabbages. The complex consisted of a gas station, craft shop, diner, motel, and a garden dominated by a rustic pool with a black swan.

The next stop was an umbrella factory, where brightly decorated paper and bamboo umbrellas are made. The paper is made from mulberry bark...

...and silk screens are dipped in a slurry of the bark paste to start the process...
