We drove to Hell Fire Pass, where prisoners of war working with their bare hands and rudimentary tools excavated a cut in the hillside for the Japanese supply trains to pass through between Thailand and Burma. There is a museum on the hilltop overlooking the pass.

Along the way, we got a good look at a water buffalo.

Next on the schedule was a long-nose boat ride on the River Kwai, where we saw brightly-colored kingfishers, monitor lizards, and huge caverns on the cliffs—some with homes built into them.
