Phil Webb, June Webb, and Sylvia Zapata pose for a shot on a rare flat portion of the trail.

Eighty percent of the climb is as steep as a staircase. What you see here are normal size stair steps, much like you'd see anywhere. But most of the steps on the Huayna Picchu Trail are two to three times higher than a normal stair step. In any case, all the rocks are slippery in the rain. The terrain is very rough, and there is mud in parts.

But the views through the mist and rain are breathtaking. This is a view of Machu Picchu mountain from one-quarter the way up the Huayna Picchu climb.

The vegetation is lush and tropical. Here is a wild begonia.

The trail goes on and on. We keep asking ourselves: Are we going to continue or turn back?
