The round building toward the back is the Temple of the Sun, the most sacred spot. It is immediately above the Royal Tomb, shown in the last photo.

This is the entrance to the sacred part of the city. Note on one side the rock is rough, and on the other the rock is carved and fitted with great care: this shows the separation between the sacred and the commonplace. The ring above the door and the two holes on either side are the fittings for an ancient wooden door.

A passageway through the ruins.

A breathtaking view of Machu Picchu from the area near the Temple of the Sun.

A view down on the Temple of the Sun.
