We stop at the baker, and Barbara buys everyone empanadas, pastry filled with cheese, onion, and meat. This huge, wood-heated bakery oven is used 24 hours a day. In the evening many different types of bread are baked.

Sylvia examines some woven place mats and tries to barter a good price.

In the evening, we are treated to a lovely home-cooked meal at a local Quechua Indian home. Our long table, with its beautiful tablecloths and flowers, rests on a dirt floor. The entire meal has been prepared on the wood-burning stove in the back corner. Around our ankles, the family guinea pigs wander at will. We drink a lovely, sweet beverage made from corn.

The cook and mother of the household.

The cook gathers with her entire adult family, including from left to right: her brother-in-law, husband, sister, and mother. All helped in the preparation of our meal. The meal was delicious and consisted primarily of local vegetables and fruits; lamb was also served.
