Maiden hair ferns grow in the crevices between the stones.

Our group makes slow progress at this high altitude. Here we stop for a breather and listen to Leylys explain about the granary and Inca face on the other side of the valley. On the bench in the background are Don James and Lucille Elbert. Leaning against the wall are Ed Glatthorn, Elaine Shurman, and Jill Schurman. In front of them are June and Phil Webb. Between the Webbs, in the background, is Terttu Alexander.

We get our first view of Incan precision stone cutting and fitting.

Sylvia stands in awe. She holds on to a knob that was probably used to anchor a gold artifact.

We view our fist trapezoidal door and first series of trapezoidal niches. Over the course of the next few days, we will see countless similar features. As we climb higher, the stones are bigger and cut with greater precision. This indicates that we are getting close to a sacred place.
